Held each year at the Citrus County Fairgrounds just south of Inverness, the
Citrus County Fair stands as a vibrant, time-honored celebration of community,
agriculture, and Florida heritage. For over a century, this beloved springtime
tradition has brought together residents and visitors alike for a week of
wholesome family entertainment, competitive exhibitions, and thrilling midway
attractions.

The roots of the Citrus
County Fair trace back to October 1920, originating as an outgrowth of local 4-H
exhibits organized by county extension agents. Initially held in the small town
of Lecanto, the fair officially found its permanent home in Inverness following
World War II. After a devastating windstorm destroyed the fair’s main exhibit
tents on a local football field in 1947, a formal Fair Association was
chartered. By 1948, the fair opened at its current grounds. Over the decades,
the site has grown to include a permanent auditorium, a bustling horse arena,
and even a historic quarter-mile racetrack that is currently home to the Citrus
County Speedway.

At its core, the Citrus
County Fair remains dedicated to its original agricultural mission. It serves as
a major showcase for the hard work of local youth involved in 4-H and Future
Farmers of America (FFA) programs. Visitors wander through the barns to see
livestock competitions featuring steers, swine, poultry, rabbits, and goats.
These youth livestock programs emphasize education, requiring participants to
complete skill-a-thons and keep detailed record books. There is a even a youth
tractor driving competition.
Beyond the livestock barns, the Exhibit Hall highlights the diverse talents of
the community. Locals of all ages enter competitive exhibits ranging from
horticulture and fine arts to photography and hand-crafted textiles. The fair
also celebrates culinary traditions, featuring highly competitive baking events
like the King Arthur Flour baking contest, where local bakers vie for blue
ribbons with their finest recipes.
For those seeking classic fairground thrills, the midway provides non-stop
energy. Partnered for decades with Belle City Amusements, the fair features an
array of neon-lit roller coasters, spinning family rides, sideshows, and
carnival games. A staple of the midway experience is the popular "Midnight
Magic" event, offering wristbands for unlimited rides well into the night.
The fair is also famous for its long-standing pageantry. The Miss Citrus County
Scholarship Pageant, which dates back to 1930, offers local young women
opportunity for academic scholarships and a chance to qualify for the Miss
Florida and Miss America circuits. The fairgrounds simultaneously host a variety
of youth pageants, including the Miss Teen, Junior Miss, and even the "Decorated
Diaper" contest for the county's youngest participants.
No county fair is complete without iconic fair food. The air at the Citrus
County Fairgrounds is always thick with the irresistible scents of funnel cakes,
smoked turkey legs, fresh popcorn, corn dogs, and candied apples. Combined with
live musical performances from both local talent and traveling artists, the fair
successfully bridges the gap between old-fashioned country charm and modern
entertainment, remaining a cornerstone of Citrus County culture.
