The Homosassa Arts, Crafts &
Seafood Festival is one of the oldest, most beloved autumn traditions on
Florida’s Nature Coast. Held annually during the second weekend of November in
historic Old Homosassa, this two-day event takes over the shaded grounds of the
Homosassa Civic Club along the banks of the Homosassa River.
The festival draws roughly 20,000 visitors every year to celebrate local
heritage through great food, art, and community spirit. The festival dates back
to May 3, 1975, when local artist Eppie Boatwright, then president of the
Homosassa Civic Club, organized a "Spring Fling Art Show" as a community
fundraiser.
In 1988, the local chapter of the Organized Fishermen of Florida stepped in as a
co-sponsor. They brought fresh local seafood – like mullet, shrimp, and
all-you-can-eat blue crab – to the mix. With the addition of local catches, the
event officially shifted to November and became the "Arts, Crafts & Seafood
Festival" we know today.
A unique custom that started at the very first event continues today: a local
artist creates a signature piece of art for the festival, which is raffled off
and used as the official commemorative t-shirt design. Attendees love wearing
shirts from previous decades to compare designs.
This isn't just your standard street market. It features a professional, juried
art show alongside dozens of craft booths. You’ll find a wide variety of mediums
including fine oil paintings, handcrafted woodwork, custom jewelry, photography,
and unique "edible crafts."
Seafood enthusiasts flock here for fresh, locally caught Florida seafood. Over
two dozen vendors serve up everything from fried fish and shrimp to
hush-puppies, crab, and regional favorites, alongside standard festival fare,
beer, and wine.
Non-stop live music runs both days across the festival grounds, usually
highlighting regional talent, country, bluegrass, and folk performers. There is
an interactive "Kids Zone" packed with activities to keep younger children
entertained while parents browse the booths and listen to music.
There is a small admission fee, with all proceeds directly benefiting local
charities, scholarships, and non-profit community initiatives. It’s a true,
old-school Florida festival that honors the tight-knit roots of this historic
riverside fishing community.
