Gornto Springs
Hidden away along the quiet, moss-draped banks of the Suwannee River near Old Town, Florida, Gornto Springs is a hidden gem that defines the "Old Florida" experience. Unlike the high-traffic state parks, this Dixie County favorite offers a more intimate connection with the River and the subterranean waters that feed it. The springs were named after the Gornto family, pioneers who settled in the area in the early 1900s. For generations, the site served as a private family retreat and community gathering spot before being developed into the public park seen today.

Gornto Springs is a second-magnitude spring, characterized by its clear, turquoise-tinted pool that remains a constant 72°F (22°C) year-round. The spring pool is roughly 40 feet wide and 125 feet long, creating a refreshing natural swimming hole before its waters spill directly into the historic Suwannee River. On the south side of the spring pool, a viewing platform extends over the water, allowing visitors to look down into the limestone vent where the water boils up from the Florida Aquifer.

Managed as a county park, Gornto Springs balances natural preservation with family-friendly facilities. It is a popular spot for locals to beat the summer heat or launch a weekend fishing trip. Concrete steps on both sides of the spring provide easy access for swimming. Average depth is about 10 feet - and there is a small sandy beach area.

A public boat ramp provides direct access to the Suwannee River. So it’s a prime starting point for kayakers and canoeists looking to explore the river’s limestone bluffs and overhanging cypress trees. A fishing pier and floating dock allow anglers to cast for largemouth bass, panfish, and suwannee bass.  The park features a fenced-in playground, picnic shelters for gatherings, and charcoal grills.

For those who want to wake up to the sound of the river, the park offers a small, well-maintained campground. It is one of the more affordable ways to experience the Suwannee River wilderness. Reasonably priced sites for RVs have electric hookups available. Tent campers are also welcome. The campground includes a bathhouse and restrooms.
