Lying along the winding path of the Suiwannee River in northeast Dixie County,
the Log Landing Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a hidden gem for seasoned
hunters, dedicated birdwatchers and hikers or bikers looking for a special way
to experience Florida's Nature Coast. The WMA actually spans nine individual
disconnected tracts along the river - some of which are in Gilchrist and
Lafayette Counties as well as Dixie County. Management of the area is a joint
venture between the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the
Suwannee River Water Management District. There are very few public conveniences
or facilities within the area.
The Log Landing Tract of the
Log Landing WMA, which is about 1167 acres, is located along the west bank of
the Suwannee River about 8 miles north of US98 near Old Town. It is accessible
via Log Landing Road (709th Avenue) off of State Road 349.
There is no public access to the river in this Tract, except by hiking along
trails within the WMA. Small parking areas with pass through gates for hikers
can be found along the road. The area is composed of a number of ecosystems,
including floodplain swamp, upland forest, sandhill, and bottomland forest. It
is open to the public year round during daylight hours. Motorized vehicles are
prohibited on the trails. Hunting is permitted in the WMA. So be sure to check
local regulations before planning your visit.
