Spring Hill is a sprawling community located in southwestern Hernando County located between US19 and US41. Remarkably, although it is a vibrant hub of densely packed homes and commercial businesses, it has never been an incorporated city.

Long before the modern suburban sprawl, the area consisted primarily of a vast, untouched expanse of Longleaf Pine forests and Sand Pine Scrub. A community named Spring Hill first appeared on Hernando County maps at this location as early as the 1840s. But for over a century the area remained heavily agricultural, rural, and largely unpopulated.

The modern history of Spring Hill officially began in 1967. The community was entirely conceptualized and built as a massive master-planned community by the Deltona Corporation and the famous Mackle Brothers - highly influential developers who shaped mid-century suburban Florida. The developers originally used "Spring Lake" as their working title during the planning phase. However, because that name was already being used by a nearby neighborhood in eastern Hernando County, they pivoted back to the historic name "Spring Hill".

The street plans and neighborhood grids for Spring Hill were designed to mirror Deltona, another massive planned community built by the same developers on the eastern side of the state. Aggressive national advertising campaigns targeted retirees and young families from the Midwest and Northeast, offering the dream of affordable, sunny Florida living. The community exploded almost overnight; in 1980, Spring Hill had a population of just under 6,500 people, but by 1990, it had surged past 31,000.

The original, symbolic entrance into the 1967 development is still commemorated today by the landmark Spring Hill Waterfall, located at the intersection of Spring Hill Drive and U.S. 19 (Commercial Way). The completion of the Suncoast Parkway toll road in 2001 heavily accelerated the growth of the area, turning Spring Hill into a highly accessible commuter hub for people working in Pasco and Hillsborough Counties.
