Bird Creek Park, located at the end of Levy County Highway 40 (also known as "Follow
That Dream Trail") about 3 miles west of Yankeetown, is a secluded recreational
area where the Withlacoochee River meets the Gulf of Mexico. It is widely regarded
as a "hidden gem" for those looking to escape more commercialized coastal
destinations, offering a quiet environment focused on nature, birding, and water
access. The park is a prime spot on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.
Visitors frequently spot Roseate Spoonbills, Wood Storks, and Bald Eagles. The salt
marshes and tidal creeks along the access road are excellent for seeing waders and
migratory songbirds during the spring and fall.
The park area is a popular launch point for kayakers and canoeists exploring the
Waccasassa Bay Preserve State Park. A paved two-lane boat ramp is located at the
end of the road for larger vessels, providing 24-hour access to the Gulf. Ample
parking is available for cars, trucks and trailers.
A small white sand beach suitable for sunbathing and swimming is located at the
park, though there are no lifeguards on duty - so swim at your own risk. Three covered
pavilions with picnic tables and grills are available first-come, first-served.
Restroom facilities are on site at the beach area.
