Watermelons
have played an important part in the development of
Monticello since the early
1890's. The annual Watermelon Festival commemorates that history, and gives the
whole town - and lots of visitors - a chance to join together for a parade,
street dance, and of course sampling the local melons.
Although advertised as being the third weekend in June each year, the Festival
actually begins with a number of events in the week prior to the main event. A
kid's pageant and kick-off dinner begins the festivities, along with bed races
through the streets of Monticello. A rodeo is also held in the days leading up
the Festival weekend.
Roads are blocked off for a street dance on Friday night with live music. Arts
and crafts vendors are on hand in the "Vendor Village" with their wares, and the
local Rotary Club puts on a big barbecue dinner. Saturday is kicked off with
breakfast at the event, followed by the Watermelon Festival Parade. You can also
enjoy a classic car show, various on-stage shows and demonstrations, and an art
show. A children's theater performance.is given in the historic Monticello Opera
House.
