The Fiddler Crab Festival is two and a
half days of fun, food, and music in the streets of downtown Steinhatchee. The
festival is headlined by its signature event, the fiddler crab races. For those
who are uninitiated in the sport ... fiddler crabs are little guys with one
giant claw - and they walk sideways. The Festival supplies the crabs - or you
may bring your own - and they are raced along metal troughs, ten at a time, to
see which one finishes first. The contest is open to adults and kids ... pretty
much anyone who wants in on the fun.
Local music is a big part of this festival. The live entertainment begins in the
evening on Friday, and continues through the day and evening on Saturday. Gospel
music groups take the stage on Sunday afternoon.
On Saturday there is a parade down Riverside Drive. A car show, fishing
tournament, poker run, and the "Swampwater Chili Cook-off" are also part of the
festivities. While you're in town, you can also take advantage of river tours of
the Steinhatchee River. Food vendors are on site during the festival, and the
event organizers kick off Saturday and Sunday by serving breakfast.
